Durham Regional Police are searching for a 23-year-old Ajax man wanted after a Tesla SUV allegedly struck two officers and fled the scene in Oshawa last month.
Yaseen Waggan of Ajax is facing multiple charges, including flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, failing to identify himself to an officer and failing to remain at the scene, according to Durham Regional Police Service.
What happened
Police say the incident began on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at approximately 1:05 a.m., when officers on proactive patrol in Central East Division spotted an Acura sedan travelling at a high rate of speed on Simcoe Street North with no lights on.
Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but it fled. It was later found parked and unoccupied in a residential driveway. Following a search of the neighbourhood, the driver was located hiding in a backyard and taken into custody, police said.
A search of the vehicle turned up a replica firearm and drugs, according to police. At the time of his arrest, the driver was already subject to conditions barring him from having care or control of a motor vehicle and requiring him to remain in his residence at night.
While officers continued their investigation at the scene, a Tesla SUV entered the area at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle stopped, officers approached and tried to speak with the driver. Police say the Tesla then reversed, striking two officers, before fleeing.
One officer was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The second officer attended hospital with minor injuries.
