Drivers in Whitby are facing roughly three years of roadwork on Columbus Road, as the Town moves ahead with a widening project that will expand the corridor from two lanes to five — with even more capacity at intersections.
The project, which requires co-ordination with multiple agencies and utilities, has detour routes already posted. All north-south roads crossing Columbus Road will remain open throughout the work, according to a Town of Whitby construction update.
Hydro relocation underway
The first phase of the Columbus Road project is already in motion: hydro poles are being relocated to the south side of the road to make room for the wider roadway. That 2.2-kilometre relocation is expected to wrap up by late 2025.
Trees and brush along the corridor will be cleared between late 2025 and early 2026, following environmental rules. That clearing must be finished by April 1, 2026. Bell and other utilities will also be adjusting their infrastructure as the project proceeds.
Major road construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, including new water crossings and the installation of water and sewer lines.
White Bridge to be replaced
The plan also calls for the complete replacement of the White Bridge on Columbus Road West, which crosses Lynde Creek. The new structure will be widened to accommodate bike lanes and sidewalks, and the work will include creek re-alignment and landscaping.
Brawley Road ditch work
Elsewhere in Whitby, crews will be redefining the profile and shape of existing ditches on the north side of Brawley Road, running from Baldwin Street East to the east end of Brawley Road.
How to track the work
The Town has an interactive online map where residents can view updates on municipal construction projects across Whitby.
Not every construction project in town is being run by the municipality, however. Some are led by Bell, Rogers, developers, Durham Region and others, and the Town cautions it may not have details on every project within its borders.
The Town is also directing residents to a Region of Durham map for information on regional construction projects happening in Whitby, and encourages people to subscribe to its Construction Updates news category for the latest information.
Residents with questions can contact the Town of Whitby directly through its website.
