Three people aboard a small aluminum boat on Lake Ontario were escorted safely to shore after the vessel struggled in rough water, Durham Regional Police Service said.

The incident happened Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the service’s West Division received a call about a boat that appeared to be in distress.

Marine Unit officers were already on Lake Ontario conducting training exercises when they responded to the call, according to police.

Officers found the boat far from shore. Police said the small vessel was having trouble navigating the rough conditions.

Two Marine Unit vessels accompanied the boat and its three occupants back to shore. Police said the escort was completed without incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sgt. Ricard of the Durham Regional Police Marine Unit at 905-579-1520, ext. 5252.
