An 18-year-old Whitby man is facing multiple charges after a single-vehicle collision in May that sent three young people to hospital with serious injuries, according to Durham Regional Police.
Police said Alexander Burgi was arrested without incident on Thursday, August 13, after the service's Collision Investigation Unit concluded its investigation into the crash near Myrtle Road West and Duffs Road.
The collision happened on Thursday, May 28, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Officers from Central West Division responded and found that a Toyota RAV4 travelling eastbound on Myrtle Road had lost control and left the roadway. At least two occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
An 18-year-old male and a 19-year-old male were taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious injuries. A 16-year-old female was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre, also with serious injuries. A 14-year-old male suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Police closed roads in the area for several hours while the Collision Investigation Unit collected evidence at the scene.
Burgi, who police identified as the driver of the Toyota, is charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation with a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit, taking a vehicle without consent, stunt driving, operating as a novice driver with blood alcohol above zero, and driving with a G1 licence without a qualified accompanying driver.
All four people injured in the collision were occupants of the vehicle, according to police.
Investigators are still asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Police are particularly interested in cell phone, dash cam or surveillance footage from the area of Myrtle Road West and Duffs Road around the time of the collision.
