A proposed six-storey apartment building with 27 units at 121 John Street East will be the subject of a June 8 meeting in Whitby, when the town considers removing a holding symbol from the property's zoning.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at 575 Rossland Road East, according to a Town of Whitby notice. The proposed change would remove the Holding (H) symbol from By-law 2585, as amended, to permit the apartment development.
The notice sets out a meeting to consider the removal; it does not announce a decision on the request. The matter is being considered under Ontario's Planning Act.
Meeting and appeal limits
For residents following the proposal, the town identifies an important distinction in the process: this is not a public meeting under the Planning Act. The notice also states that appeal rights are limited to the applicant.
The town says notice has been provided in accordance with the act to individuals within the land affected by the application. It has also been provided to individuals and agencies that asked the Town Clerk for further notice of meetings concerning removal of the holding symbol.
How to obtain the decision or more information
Anyone wishing to receive a copy of the amending by-law, or a refusal of the request, must submit a written request to the Town Clerk. The mailing address is Corporation of the Town of Whitby, 575 Rossland Road East, Whitby, Ontario, L1N 2M8.
Residents seeking additional information about the application can contact the town's Planning and Development Department. The notice directs questions about preserving appeal rights to that department as well, while specifying that only the applicant has appeal rights in this process.
The department is located at the Whitby Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East. Its regular working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Planning staff can be reached at 905-430-4306 or by email at planning@whitby.ca for information relating to the application.
